Special pack with two films from 1946 and 1949 starring Larry Parks but with the singing voice of Al Jolson himself. Total running time is over three and a half hours. THE JOLSON STORY - Larry Parks gives the performance of his life in the story of Al Jolson, from his meteoric rise to fame, to the doubts and depression that emerged later in his career. One of the greatest musicals ever made, The Jolson Story is an electrifying cavalcade of lavish production numbers with an all-star cast. Winning Academy Awards for Musical Scoring and Sound Recording, the film also received four Academy Award nominations in 1946, including Best Actor for Larry Parks' portrayal of Al Jolson. JOLSON SINGS AGAIN -Larry Parks repeats his unforgettable role as Al Jolson in this musical extravaganza. The dramatic story of one of America's all-time favourite entertainers continues in this captivating motion picture. The drama unfolds when Jolson exits retirement and heads back to Broadway where he discovers that musical styles have changed and his exuberant brand of minstrel jazz no longer pulls top-billing. Discouraged and tired of a life of wine, women and little song - Jolson turns to his friend and manager (William Demarest) who enlists him to entertain troops during the war. There he falls in love with and marries a beautiful army nurse (Barbara Hale) who encourages Al to sing again. Get set for an exciting array of Jolson's most popular songs, including 'Baby Face' and 'Sonny Boy', in this electrifying and true-to-life story as Jolson Sings Again. Two DVDs with a total running time of over two and a half hours. DVD No. 1 - Features the full film plusan introduction by the author of ‘Forever Ealing’ plus trailers etc. DVD No.2 features a 52 minute documentary ‘Distilling Whisky Galore’ and a 20 minute interview with IslanderAngus Campbell who recounts the original events at the ‘real’ whisky galore. Also various other interviews. Whisky Galore! ranks among one of the most popular Ealing titles ever made and the BFI included it in a list of the best 100 British films of the 20th Century. The film takes place on the remote island of Todday in the outer Hebrides which is blissfully untouched by the ravages of WWII until the island’s wartime ration of whisky or ‘the water of life’, dries up completely leaving the locals in a state of devastation. By a stroke of good fortune, a cargo ship carrying 50,000 cases of whisky is wrecked off the island and the liquor parched locals conspire against the home guard to smuggle the whisky off the ship. Now considered one of the greats of British comedy, Whisky Galore! features some excellent performances from Basil Radford and Joan Greenwood and was the first film made by Scottish director Alexander Mackendrick who went on to make other hugely successful Ealing classics such as The Ladykillers and The Man in the White Suit. - Beltona Music Scotland - The Very Best in Scottish, Irish, Celtic Music

JOIN THE original crew of the good ship Vital Spark on their precarious voyage of life through the uncharted seas of change. Or, more precisely - up and down the Clyde. Sadly, these are the only five remaining episodes of this classic BBC series. In ‘A DROP O’ THE REAL STUFF, wily Para Handy gets the crew involved in whisky smuggling. In ‘BAD LUCK CARGO', never the one to miss an opportunity, the Captain takes possession of an unwanted headstone with a view to making a killing on the resale. In ‘THE WEDDING’, it's near mutiny when the crew are invited to the wedding of the year - all except Dan! In 'THE QUARREL', having been at sea for a considerable time, it’s inevitable that the odd quarrel will break out. The sparks really fly when the Cap'n gives Dan his jotters - is it the end of the line for the Vital Spark and her crew? Finally, enjoy a ‘HIGHLAND VOYAGE’ with the crew, old and new, aboard the steamer as she takes a musical journey around the Scottish Isles. Roddy McMillan, John Grieve, Walter Carr and Alex McAvoy star in this old comedy classic, which truly has stood the test of time and is a must for any connoisseur of Scottish humour. In various episodes there are guest appearances from Duncan MacRae, Fulton MacKay, Russell Hunter, and Alex MacKenzie. ‘The music of the mountains and lochs lies deep in his soul’, once wrote a Daily Express critic of Alasdair Gillies. It’s with some considerable pleasure that we have released this compilation of Alasdair’s recordings, however on this CD you won’t just visit mountains and lochs. Alasdair’s songs will also take you to many other parts of Scotland. A wonderful singer with some fine orchestrations. What a pity we don’t produce songsters of this calibre nowadays. 20 Tracks - Bonnie Strathyre : The Whisky Chorus : Buain a’ Rainich - ‘Sann an Ile : Brochan Lom - Mo Ghun Tomaidh : Bratach Bana : The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen : St. Mungo Bells : Angus MacFergus MacTavish Dundee : The Lovely Lass of Inverness : Chi mi Muile (Mull is my Home) : Uist Tramping Song - Air Fa La La Lo - Top of the Morning : Bonnie Gallowa’ : The Wee Kirkcudbright Centipede : My Scotland : Mo Shuil Ad Dheigh (Repining for Thee) : The Lass o’ Bon Accord : The Lights on Lochindaal : Many A Day : The Banks o’ Sicily - Twa Recruitin’ Sergeants - A Gordon for Me - The Battle’s O’er : Leis An Lurgainn (Boating Song) : Flower of Scotland : Farewell to Nova Scotia - Beltona Music Scotland - The Very Best in Scottish, Irish, Celtic Music

Robert Wilson was born in 1907. In his early twenties became a professional singer with the Rothesay Entertainers. He moved from there to the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company before becoming a solo singer with a mainly Scottish repertoire. Radio spots, full theatres and stardom soon followed. Tragically, Robert died in 1964 having never fully recovered from a car accident the previous year. But he will surely never be forgotten, truly ‘The Voice of Scotland’.
