In 1901, a seventeen year old Glaswegian called Hugh Roberton took up conductorship of the Toynbee House Choir. The mixed voice choir took it's name from it's meeting place at the Toynbee Men's Social Club, 25 Rottenrow, Glasgow.

In the next few years the choir was discovered by the public and gained great popularity. In 1906, it broke it's links with Toynbee to become an independent organisation and one of the true treasures of Scotland. It's new name was The Glasgow Orpheus Choir.
