George Clavey was born in Edinburgh in 1928. A non-Gaelic speaker, he began learning the language whilst working in Skye. There he also learned songs and eventually became conductor of one of the island's choirs.
His mastery of Gaelic combined with his excellent singing voice led him to win the prestigious National Mod Gold Medal in 1960. He was the first non-native speaker to do so.
George became a favourite Gaelic singer sought at to perform at ceilidhs and on radio and television. He remained a busy character in Gaelic circles until shortly before his death in 2003.
